Happy Tuesday everyone!

This week we’re starting a new 3-part topic for our youth groups that I’m really excited about! It’s simply called “Mental Health” and for the next few weeks we’re going to be talking about various issues related to mental health such as depression, self-medication, suicide, self-harm, and self-awareness. As you can tell from that brief description, we’re not pulling any punches.

Our young people are growing up in a climate conflicted: reported mental health issues are increasing at staggering rates and they’re also more stigmatized than ever. It was recently reported that an overwhelming 1 in 4 American teenagers is clinically depressed and receiving treatment, yet it can still be regarded as a “dirty little secret.” As we talk about Depression this week, we will be honest about the fact that we’re sinful people in a sinful world, and we won’t minimize or explain away the real pain we can feel in this life. Yet what joy that we can take refuge in the honest and gracious words of our Savior that “in this world you will have trouble, but take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33b)

In our Savior, we have the freedom to be imperfect people, loved by a Perfect Savior. It’s okay to not be okay, it’s okay to admit our weakness because our lives don’t ultimately depend on how okay we are or aren’t.
