Hello friends!

This week we’ll be starting Jr. High Youth Group back up for the new year, and we’re going to talk a little about New Year’s Resolutions and our self-help culture.

We all have things about our lives and our selves that we wish we could change, to try and make the most out of life. While it’s not a bad impulse to try and use our lives to the fullest, it can take us too far. The idea that we can help ourselves or fix ourselves essentially becomes an attempt to make ourselves holy, or to justify ourselves, through behavior modification. The problem is that we can’t, and pretending that we can is actually a miserable way to live. That life of self-justification is not only miserable, but it can cause us to miss the freedom and true life-changing power of Jesus!

We’ll be going back to our good friends at The Bible Project to help get another angle on how the only thing that can really change us and make us new is God’s Holy Spirit- a gift given to us freely through Jesus.

Both 5th & 6th Grade (5:30-6:30pm) and the 7th & 8th Grade(6:30pm-8:00pm) youth groups will be meeting this week.

Thanks everyone!

Discussion Questions

•Why do you think humans are so good at seeing the things we want to change?

•”We can’t really change ourselves, no matter how hard we try.” Do you agree or disagree with that statement? Why?

•What difference do you think it would make in a person’s life to trust what Jesus has done more that what we can do?
