Readings for the Third Sunday in Lent

          John 4:5-26; Romans 5:1-8; Exodus 17:1-7

What are you thirsty for? Sunday’s readings take us way beyond the physical craving for our favorite beverage. Jesus knows our deeper spiritual thirst…for love, for peace, for forgiveness. And he wants us to know that he – and he alone – can quench that thirst in us. To the Samaritan woman at the well he offers himself as “living water” (John 4). The Israelites allowed their physical craving for water in the desert to drown out their faith in the LORD to be their faithful provider. Still, the LORD blesses them with miracle water from the rock (Ex 17). Paul describes how God would not abandon us to our shallow and sinful cravings. Instead God showed His deep and immeasurable love by dying for us “while we were yet sinners” (Rom 5). So again, what are you thirsty for? Look to Christ, and be satisfied.
